The former Facebook’s attempt to rebrand itself as a metaverse company could lead public attention away from its many scandals, unify its communication ubernetworks of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, help it escape Apple’s data collection clampdown squeezing its revenue (although not exclusively), or play up and better monetize one of its least controversial divisions in the imminently Meta-morphic Oculus.

Three times as many consumers report having used a VR headset than own a VR headset.

While definitions of the metaverse differ, the term implies some level of mixed or extended reality. With that in mind, would-be metaverse platform providers have a long way to go based on based on the level of participation in today’s typical applications.
